How to make a T-shirt quilt

Today’s tutorial is an oldie but a goody. One of the first tutorial series I made was a 10-part series on how to make a T-shirt quilt from start to finish. Today more than 60,000 people have viewed that first video and I still get emails from people who used the instructions to make their first quilt.

The shooting was done long before I had a studio, lights and a video camera, so you’ll have to settle with my dining room and a cell phone camera. But the videos are very thorough and I’ve combined all the videos into one playlist, which is embed above. You’ll learn how to cut out your T-shirts, stabilize them with fusible interfacing, a tip for sewing sashing quickly, how to add sashing to your quilt blocks, tips on laying out your quilt, sewing it together, quilting it and how to bind.

I’ve also included several of my favorite tools and supplies I use to make T-shirt quilts with in the collection above. These are affiliate links, which means if you purchase something through Amazon, I will receive a small portion of the sale price. Just think of it as a win-win for both of us. You get an awesome quilting tool that I recommend because I use it and love it. And you help support this website, which means more free quilting tutorials for you.

I’ve made several T-shirt quilts through the years using these methods and it is pretty easy. It makes a great Christmas or graduation present, or just a quilt for your own enjoyment to remember vacations, school memories or sports teams you played on.

I hope you enjoy this tutorial. Happy quilting!

  1. I wrote down how much fabric I needed for everything but I’ve lost it and I looked on your website under tutorials as you mentioned in your “how to make a t-shirt quilt” tutorial and I can’t find it anywhere. I’m sure it’s there somewhere. Help!

  2. I love this design! But I need to know how much fabric is needed for all sizes. Please help! I don’t want to buy too much of something and then not enough of another. I want to start this project yesterday…please help!

  3. I too am looking for how much material I need for the sashing and around the quilt. I had it at one time and can’t find it.
