January 2016 Block of the Month

There’s nothing like starting a new quilt. Cutting the crisp fabric, taking a peak at the pattern techniques, putting the first of many blocks together. The new quilt excitement is what keeps us quilting, and why there are so many UFOs, the next project just looks more fun.

Well today we get to experience all the fun of starting a new project. The first block in the Quilt Addicts Anonymous 2016 Block of the Month Stars in the Night is officially out! Just click here to download your free instructions. (If you haven’t created an account, you will need to click here to create free account in order to download patterns).

2016

This year we’re trading in the medallion for an alternate grid layout. The modern placement of blocks features 12 block designs in sizes from 3 to 18 inches. And when it all comes together at the end of the year it will look like stars twinkling in the night sky. We’re starting out by making four 18-inch stars that will be very dominant in the final design.

There is some paper piecing involved. If you haven’t done it before, don’t worry. There are step-by-step instructions with photos in the printable instructions, as well as a video tutorial that you can watch above. But if you’re really stumped, then check out Carol Doak’s paper piecing class on Craftsy, Carol Doak’s Mastering Foundation Paper Piecing Craftsy class. She is the Queen of Paper Piecing and she is the instructor I learned from. You’ll also need Carol Doak’s Foundation Paper and the Add-A-Quarter Plus Ruler.

  1. Great video! I love that block. I have so many things going on this year, I may not wind up making the whole quilt, but I’m definitely going to make a block like this, and maybe use it as the center of a baby quilt with some of the other blocks. Thanks for an easy-to-follow video tutorial.

  2. What a Beautiful Block!! Your designs are so wonderful thank you for sharing your designs with us. Looking forward to seeing the rest.

  3. I was wondering if you were going to post the material list? I enjoyed the BOM for 2015. It helped having the picture of the completed quilt and the fabric requirements. Thanks for such a wonderful quilt.

  4. Stephanie,

I purchased your mitten pattern and a sweater recently. I thought I saved the download to my IPad, however, it is telling me the link is unavailable. I sent email to you for your assistance. Look forward to your reply, as I am anxious to make them! Thank you!

  5. I printed off the fabric requirements and it seems like a lot of fabric, the background fabric needs 12.5 yds??? is this fabric 42-44 inches wide or narrower?? Needing 22.5 yds for quilt really seems like way to much. Can you explain please

    1. The fabric is the standard 42-44″. This quilt finishes 108×120 inches and we’re using paper piecing for some blocks, which has some waste associated with, but is very accurate. The two together, mean you need a lot of fabric.

  6. I don’t know what I am doing wrong but I can’t creat a account. I hit the register button and nothing happens.

  7. Great video haven’t done paper piecing for quite a while. Your video tutorial was precise and very clear. I feel very confident in starting this square. Thank you so much.

  8. I see the pattern for January 2016 and I click everywhere but I don’t get it to download. I watched the video and I’m anxious to start. I downloaded the fabric requirements, no problem. I have an account I did the 2015 block of the month and I have ordered patterns from you. Do we now go to Craftsy to get each monthly pattern?

  9. HI- I just finished my January blocks and they are fabulous. Love the colors and the design. I posted the first block on Facebook and 2 people have already offered to buy my quilt (nope- it’s for MY bed!!). Just wanted to say thank you, Stephanie. Have only been quilting a year but I was able to follow your directions and video instruction with no problems. Betty

  10. I just started to cut my fabric for Jan and have a question for you. It says to cut 4 strips wof at 6 3/4 inches then sub cut into 16 6 3/4 inch blocks. I did that but I got my 16 6 3/4 blocks from 3 strips. What do you do with the 4th strip? Is it for later on or is this a misprint? I didn’t want to cut anything from it until I am sure. Thank you for any help
