Offset Log Cabin Tutorial & Pattern! Fat Quarter Friendly – Undulation by Quilt Addicts Anonymous

Sewing an offset log cabin has been on my quilt bucket list for more than a decade and we’re finally doing it today!

This is seriously one of the coolest blocks out there. The print strips are fatter than the background strips, which makes the block appear curved even though it is made out of a bunch of rectangles.

That makes for some seriously fun layout possibilities like the undulating curve we are creating over two rows. But the fun of the log cabin is that there are an almost endless amount of layouts you can choose from once your blocks are together, so this is a quilt you can really make your own.

If you’ve made a log cabin before and it came out wonky and undersized, don’t worry, I’ve packed the video with tons of helpful tips and tricks to make sure you end up with square blocks that are the correct size.

And one of the biggest culprits of wonky log cabin blocks are rectangles that are cut on the WOF instead of the length of fabric. The WOF can be pretty stretchy, not as bad as the bias, but bad enough to warp your block.

This pattern includes instructions on how to cut your log cabin strips on the length of fabric. This does two things, helps you avoid wonky blocks, by cutting on the straight grain, and it maximizes the fabric so that no scrap is left behind.
