Rulerwork & Stitch-in-the-Ditch with pressed open seams – Triangle Master Class

The Quilt Police are going to have a problem with this video … I show you how I stitch-in-the-ditch with my seams pressed open. GASP!

I think once upon a time when quilting fabric, thread, sewing machines and batting weren’t as good as they were today, this may have cause some issues. So we had this piece of knowledge passed down that you can’t press your seams open and if you do, sitching-in-the-ditch is out for quilting options.

But as long as you are using quilt shop quality cotton, high quality thread, batting, and a modern sewing machine, not only can you press your seams open AND stitch-in-the-ditch, but you’ll actually get BETTER RESULTS than if you had pressed to the side.

I’m not alone in this. Well known quilters Christa Watson and Leah Day also swear by pressing their seams open to give them better results when they quilt, along with A LOT of other professional quilters.

So clutch those pears and watch as I quilt Raspberry Sherbet in our bonus video for the Triangle Masterclass series. You’ll see how I take those triangles and make them pop even more with rulerwork, see how I work my way around the quilt so I don’t have to break thread, AND how I stitch-in-the-ditch with my seams pressed open.

This video is the final installment in our Triangle Masterclass, a collection of eight videos focusing on different types of triangle units that are commonly used in quilts.

You can use this video to improve your triangle piecing on any quilt. Or you can get our pattern Raspberry Sherbet which uses all of the techniques we cover in the series. It comes in four sizes, but we made the lap version for this tutorial series.

Raspberry Sherbet is fat quarter friendly and we have quilt kits available!

We also have created a Triangle Masterclass category on our website that has in-stock fat quarter bundles that would work for this quilt in the lap size. Just add background and you’ll be good to go.

I can’t wait to make this quilt with you!
