Introduction to the 15-Minute Table Runner
Today, I’m excited to walk you through creating the 15-minute table runner. While the project is simple and quick, you’ll indeed enjoy every moment of it.
I initially made this table runner years ago as a gift for my grandma. Although it took longer than 15 minutes at that time, I consider myself a fast and accurate quilter—we’ll see together if I can actually do it within the timeframe!
For this tutorial, I’ll be featuring Mia Charo’s latest collection, Bird Garden, available through FreeSpirit Fabrics. I’ll be using the Monica print for the center. Remember, if I exceed the 15 minutes slightly due to some precise cutting, consider it close enough!
Getting Started

The first steps involve preparing our fabrics. You’ll need a quarter yard for your center strip and a half yard for the surrounding strips and backing. The simplicity of this project means there’s no batting involved, making it even faster.
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Cutting the Fabric:
– Measure and cut your fabric to ensure your design (in this case, the bird) is precisely centered. – Lay the entire section out and align the selvedges.
2. Sewing the Strips:
– Align your center strip’s selvedges with the selvedges of your surrounding pieces.
– Stitch from one end to the other, treating it like strip piecing.
– Press the seams open for a smooth finish.
3. Assembling the Runner:
– Flip and align the pieces right sides together, and stitch the remaining sides.
– Press the seams open again.
– Trim the edges to ensure everything is neat and even.
Adding Embellishments

Now comes the fun part—embellishments! We will be making yo-yos and adding buttons for decoration.
Creating a Yo-Yo:
– Use a Clover yo-yo maker to shape your fabric into a yo-yo.
– Stitch around the edges and gather it tightly to form a neat circle.
– Secure the yo-yo with a knot.
Attaching the Yo-Yos and Buttons:
– Position your yo-yo over the fabric’s seam where it makes a right angle.
– Stack and sew your chosen buttons to the yo-yo for added flair.
– Ensure everything is securely stitched to withstand use.
The Final Verdict
After dedicating 33 minutes to sewing the base and about 15 minutes more to embellishments, we’ve concluded that the 15-minute table runner is more realistically a 45-minute project.
However, it’s still a fast, enjoyable project perfect for any sewing level.
You’ll Want To Make It Again
This table runner project is not only quick but also incredibly versatile. You can create variations for each season or occasion, making it a staple in your home decor projects.
The Bird Garden collection by Mia Charo adds a beautiful, modern touch that will impress anyone. Remember, the fabrics are available in stores now.
