Finally! We get to do some actual sewing! In today’s video we are going to be making the split nine patch quilt block. This is a really basic block that is very beginner-friendly, but it looks just fancy enough to wow people when you tell them this is your first quilt.
Basically all quilt blocks are put together in a grid system. You either have two rows of two (four patch), three rows of three (nine patch), four rows of four and so on.
In a split nine patch, you sew nine squares that are all the same size together into three rows of three. Then to “split” it, you cut it in half down the horizontal and vertical centers. If you have never quilted before, that may sound hard, but in the video I break each step down to make it doable.
First we sew the rows together, go over how to press properly so there are no pleats where flat seams should be, how to join your rows together and bravely take your rotary cutter to slice them apart and sew them back together.
The results are super cool because it looks like you spent a lot of time cutting and piecing little squares and rectangles, but you know that you took the easy way out.
Now here is the best part about this pattern. Since we are essentially sewing a bunch of square units together, if you are off a little bit, it isn’t the end of the world.
When I started quilting the only rulers I had for a long time were the 6″x24″ Olfa, the 6 1/2″ square Olfa and the 12 1/2″ square Olfa. You can do just about everything you need to with that combination.
Alright, let’s do this. Time to go make your first quilt block!

Great series. Learned a lot. Thank you so much.
Im having trouble finding the beginner quilting videos in order…. Is there one place they are listed? I have downloaded the free pattern . I have watched the supplies video and the video on fabric – big box vs quilt store quality. I keep going in circles and end up with the meandering quilting video which cant be next. Thanks
