Barn quilts of Shawano County
I’ve been vacationing in Shawano County Wisconsin since I was a little girl. My family owns a cabin on Lake Shawano and some of my best memories were made there.
But now every time I drive up there, I have to have my camera with me. The farmers around the county have erected more 200 barn quilts, each one more beautiful than the last.
I took several photos when I spent a week there in August last year, and found several more when I spent Fourth of July in Shawano.
We’d already stopped three times before I came to the official sign declaring Shawano the Barn Quilt Capitol of Wisconsin at the edge of the city limits. I tweeted that I needed a bumper sticker that read, “Stops for all Barn Quilts.”
I’m trying to get a hold of the man behind the barn quilt explosion so I can tell you more about them, and I’m planning on dragging my husband around the county to see at least a couple dozen more when I go back in August. But for now, you’ll just have to settle for my latest round of photos.

These barn quilts are so awesome. I wish I lived close enough to actually see them in person!
Jim Leuenberger and his wife have volunteered hundreds of hours to making these quilts happen – incredible people! You can often find him at the Saturday farmers market in Shawano.
