Modern quilt inspired by an antique

I’m working on a new baby quilt. I designed the pattern to be a modern version of the pictorial kit quilts that were popular in the mid-20th Century.

I have a few of the antique crib quilts in my collection. They feature one large image that is appliqued, embroidered or both. Some are on a plain background, others feature decorative borders.

My modern version will be made entirely from batiks for a bold look instead of the soft pastels the antiques feature. Instead of a white background, I’ve found some green and gray batiks that I’ve pieced into blocks for the background.

Then the applique will be a three foot high monkey hanging from a tree branch. I already have the applique fused, so as soon as I finish the background I can get to work on the monkey.

I’m pretty excited about this quilt. I think it has a lot of potential. What are you working on right now?

Update: Hangin’ Around is now available for download.
