Stripping in Paradise square

We’re leaving the cold winter behind and headed to the tropics with the next Quilt Addicts Anonymous Fabric Exchange.

My cheeky title for this quilt is Stripping in Paradise, and that’s because we are exchanging batik stripsĀ to make strip sets that will be cutĀ into squares and then turned into half square triangles to create the dramatic look of this quilt.

Stripping in Paradise

One really great side effect of the construction method, besides making a complicated looking quilt relatively simple to put together, is there are no matching seams within the block. Even when you’re piecing the strip side of the half square triangle together, the seams are offset a quarter-inch, so there very little pinning involved.

The fee for this exchange is a little higher than the first one, but that’s because you will get nearly twice the yardage for all the black halves of the half square triangles and the binding. The finished quilt is 66 inches square, so perfect for a couch throw or a beach blanket when it finally does warm up this summer.

And if you’re thinking to yourself, “Stephanie, you’ve mentioned that you live in the Mid West, how did you get a photo of a quilt in a tropical garden in the middle of winter?” The answer would be that I went to the Quad City Botanical Center, which has an indoor Tropical Sun Garden that is open year round. If you are ever in the Quad Cities, I highly suggest checking it out.

  1. I would love the pattern, so I can make this quilt in reds/white/blues for donation quilts for our service men and women.

  2. Finished my quilt top and will email a pic when the sun is shining…the fabric strips are in a more dramatic contrast from light to dark than your example so it is a more abrupt transition from the yellow-green to the dark blue-purple…liked the pattern, learned some new tips. Would make it again with more gradated color choices for the transition to flow more softly. Also will be more careful when sewing black to fabric strips to ensure correct layouts for placement of directional blocks.

  3. I participated in the Stripping in Paradise exchange. I am disappointed that I have not seen an announcement of the winner chosen from this exchange. I posted a comment about this some months back and still haven’t seen a response.
