Friday progress report: Maple leaves, log cabins and distractions

Maple Leaf Log Cabin, Marti Michell, quilt pattern

It’s time for a progress report. As my Instagram and Twitter followers know, I’ve been hard at work on the king-size maple leaf log cabin quilt I started in June when I took a class from Marti Michell.

Last weekend I finished my 40th block, which sounds great until you hear that I’m making 64. That’s 24 more to go. I could stop now, but then my quilt would only be 90 inches square once I add the borders. I have a bad habit of stealing the covers, so I really need the extra 24 inches or my poor husband will freeze.

Making this much progress this quickly is pretty much unheard of for me. I tend to work really hard on a project for a week or two, get bored and move onto something else. Yes, I have a lot of UFOs.

Instagram has really been what has kept me going on this project. I keep hearing from you all that you can’t wait to see what it looks like when the quilt is done, so I’m motivated to keep at it.

But that doesn’t mean I still don’t have a case of Quilter’s ADD every once in a while. I may have gone to the fabric store to pick up some more greens for the maple leaf log cabin last weekend and came home with fabric for a Christmas lap quilt. That project may or may not be completely cut out and ready to piece on my dining room table right now.

Really who could resist this fabric line. It’s Holiday Frost by Jan Shade for Henry Glass & Co. just in case you love it too.

I promise to whip this one up real quick and get back to the maple leaf log cabin post-haste. What are you all working on?

  1. Hi! I’m starting my first maple leaf log cabin quilt (with the help from quilters at my library) and was wondering if you would share the size of your pattern – how big the strips, and maple leaf square are? Thanks!
