Refraction video tutorial and pattern

I make a lot of quilts. It is part of the job of being a pattern designer. I like them all, but I love Refraction. The quilt is deceptively simple. It uses strip piecing and a 60-degree ruler to create the the diamond shapes you see here. The quilt is made with a jelly roll […]

Craftsy class review: ‘Help! How Do I Quilt It?’

I enrolled in one of Craftsy’s newer quilting classes, “Help! How Do I Quilt It? A Machine Quilting Manual” by Angela Walters last week to get some ideas for quilting my 2014 Block of the Month quilt. I have never quilted anything so large in anything other than an all-over pattern and wanted to do […]

Using storage totes to organize fabric by project

Like most sewers I have trouble keeping my fabric organized. I have a closet packed with fabric, but it is mostly just yardage stacked on top of each other. I needed a solution for projects with little pieces or notions that don’t stack well. I found it during one of those trips to Target when […]

Singer goes retro for its newest machine

My first sewing machine was a Singer and I loved it. My grandparents got it for me when I was in grade school. It sat mostly unused until I found myself incredibly bored one day after I graduated from college and took up quilting. From then on I used the machine almost every day for […]

Saying goodbye to Nonna

This week I said goodbye to my grandmother, or Nonna, as my cousins and I called her. Born in Italy in 1925, she was raised to be a wife and mother. She cooked, cleaned, sewed and raised four children who loved her. The strange thing about death is that while it is painfully sad for […]

Finished quilts of 2014

This past year was pretty productive when it came to quilting. I finished seven quilts, four of which were UFOs when the year began. I didn’t finish all the UFOs I set out to complete this year, but I plan to spend the night hand quilting to at least finish the final border of my […]

The monkey baby quilt is taking shape

A couple weeks ago I teased you all with a post about a baby quilt I’m working on that features a giant monkey hanging from a tree branch. Well today comes the reveal of the top. The top isn’t completely done because while the applique is fused in place, I still need to finish stitching around […]

Virtual Shop Hop – A Quilting Bee, Mahomet, Ill.

You can find A Quilting Bee in charming downtown Mahomet, Ill. It’s the kind of main street that is just a couple of blocks long, filled with small shops where you used to be able to buy everything you needed before Walmart came along. The quilt shop, which is located about 15 minutes from Champaign/Urbana, […]

It’s here! The Mini Block of the Month has officially launched. For those of you who haven’t been following along, the Mini Block of the Month, is a three-month BOM program for quilters who don’t have the budget to make a king-sized quilt or don’t want to make a year-long commitment to a quilt. The […]
