It’s done! BOM 2014 on the bed for the first time
I know, we’re three quarters of the way through 2015, and I’m just now putting my 2014 BOM on the bed for the first time. I’m finding everything takes 10 times as long as normal when you have a toddler running around the house.
I finished putting this beauty together at my guild’s biannual quilt retreat last spring, and then I spent a month quilting it on the longarm at Quilting By-You. I would spend one day a week renting time on the longarm. First I stitched in the ditch along all the borders and between each block to stabilize the quilt so I could quilt each block individually.
Then I picked four different types of free motion stitches, one for each color of fabric. My thought there was although I would quilt each block individually, by using the same type of stitch in each white piece of fabric throughout the quilt there would be cohesion throughout the quilt.
I’ve got one tip, if you’re planning to do the same. Take photos of each block on your smartphone so you can refer to them the next time you come to it. That definitely beats the alternative of unrolling the quilt to jog your memory.
My favorite part is the large half square triangles in the center medallion. I just love the fern-like design I quilting in the large open space. I only wish I would have had a less busy fabric to work with so the stitches would show up more.
I like the way the custom quilting looks, but it took a VERY long time. When I finish the pink and purple version of this quilt I will stabilize the borders only and do allover quilting withing each border and save the custom quilting for the center only.
But for now I am loving how the blue and yellow version quilt looks in my bedroom, which is also decorated in the same color scheme.

I see a lot of pretty quilting with the home machines and then I go “hey I can do that:……..not, having a ripping session now, good thing I tried it on a smaller quilt my 2014 will have to wait but at least it’s sandwiched.
Beautiful job longarming on a pretty quilt! Blue, white, & yellow are one of my favorite color combinations. It gives you an appreciation of the time custom longarming takes, doesn’t it?!?! Usually I wonder at the beginning of the job how long it will take and by the end I just cannot wait to see what it will look like when the quilt relaxes and the little puffs begin to pop before my eyes. Great job!
This is beautiful! I have always wanted a quilt in these colors. Even though it would not go with any room in my house.
You did a lovely job on the quilt and I have to agree that the triangle stitching really helps tie it all together. It is beautiful! If you get tired of it, I would be proud to have it on my bed. ;-0. It will be interesting to see how you stitch the 2015 BOM that is currently going on.
