Quilting to Process Grief: Six Quilts in Four Months

From Courtney, our video editor:

In November 2022, my dad died. In the following months, I found myself in need of a project to process the anger, sadness, and loss I was feeling.

While going through his possessions, I realized how many T-shirts my dad had collected during his life. He had shirts dating back to the 1970s and my family and I had clear memories of them.

It became clear to me what I needed to do. I was not a quilter. I had pieced one-and-a-half quilt tops, but had not completed the process from beginning to end all by myself. Despite this fact, I decided I was going to make six T-shirt quilts, and that I would display them at the celebration of life I was planning. To meet that deadline, I had four months.

I purchased a new sewing machine. I used our T-Shirt Quilt pattern, because I had edited the video tutorials and felt I understood the process. I got entire bolts of interfacing, batting and wide backing, and I got started.

I completed every step of the process myself. But I was not alone. My family, friends, coworkers, and the quilt community on TikTok were cheering me on. I documented the entire process, and today we’re sharing it with you.

Thanks for sharing my journey with me.
