The Mariposa quilt design came to me in the middle of the night when I was pregnant with my second daughter. I just couldn’t get the butterfly blocks out of my head. Then when I saw Tula Pink’s True Colors in person, I knew the Hexy and Mineral prints were the butterfly wings I had been waiting for.
I used a rainbow of colors for the wings and reserved the lime prints for the bodies to give the quilts a consistent pop. I used Tula’s Glacier solid as a nice neutral background that gave me a break from white and gray, with the mint making the quilt even more sweet.
The quilt uses a tiny bit of paper piecing to create the butterfly bodies. Don’t panic if you’ve never paper pieced before, this is one of the simplest ways to use it out there and I walk you through it step-by-step in today’s tutorial.
Then it is just some stitch and flip to create butterfly wings, some simple piecing and your fabric squares and rectangles have metamorphosed into a beautiful butterfly.
