Stars & Stripes Quilts of Valor Pattern tutorial
I just love this pattern and not just because it finally allowed me to use up some patriotic fabric I bought during a trip to Washington, D.C. for my cousin’s wedding. He’s been married six years, so it is about time that section of the stash got used up.
This pattern fits the requirements of a Quilts of Valor pattern. Quilts of Valor was founded by the mother of an Iraq War soldier while her son was deployed as a way to honor veterans for their service and sacrifice to their country. To date, Quilts of Valor has given more than 142,000 quilts to veterans.
Stars and Stripes also combines two of my favorite pattern elements, the log cabin and star block. I love how they come together to help create the look of a flag waving in the wind.
The video tutorial above shows you how to make this pattern step-by-step. IÂ walk you through cutting the log cabin strips parallel to the selvage so they don’t stretch, making four-at-a-time flying geese and sewing it all together to make this beautiful quilt that meets the requirements of a patriotic Quilts of Valor quilt. I was present at a presentation last night of 3 quilts to WWII veterans. The oldest was 97, and still mobile and sharp as a tack. The other two were, as well, but only in the 90-91 range. It is such a beautiful thing to see them honored. Thanks for this tutorial. Another question, do you ship fabric overseas? Spain particularly.
