Loopy Meander Block Filler – Intro to Free Motion Quilting

Welcome to our Intro Free Motion Quilting series! We are so excited about this course so we can help give you the confidence to finish your quilts yourself on your home sewing machine or longarm.

My goal when I quilt is to choose stitching patterns that will help accentuate the piecing and fabric. I’ve worked hard on the top and I love the fabric, so I want my quilting to help make both as fabulous as possible.

One of the easiest ways to use your quilting to bring the top to life is to use different free motion quilting stitches for my background and block filler.

The technique clearly defines your block and really elevates the look of your quilting when you are ready to graduate from an all over quilting stitch to a more custom look.

We’re using all the same color thread for this class, but on a pieced quilt top, I would consider switching threads, using something that blends with the background and then changing to a color that blends with the focus fabrics for the block filler.

If you haven’t watched our intro videos on the supplies you’ll need and how to use your stencils and Pounce Pad, make sure you watch those first on our class page: https://www.quiltaddictsanonymous.com/intro-to-free-motion-quilting/

We have created four reorderable quilt kits using solid fabrics from Northcott Colorworks. The richly colored fabrics are fabulous to work with, and it will make it very easy to see your stitches and make your stitching the star or the show.

Make sure you grab a stencil kit, which contains the four stencils and pounce pad we are using to learn the four basic stitches. And grab the quilt pattern, which is FREE with the purchase of any Free Motion Quilting Kit.

  1. Hi Stephanie….when you finished the quilting inside the star, the fabric puffed up a little in a few places. Would it be better to quilt the inside of the star first, then stitch the outline of the star itself, then the quilt the outside of the star? This would give allow any puffiness in the fabric to work its way out to the edge of the block….what do you think?
