Welcome to our Intro Free Motion Quilting series! We are so excited about this course so we can help give you the confidence to finish your quilts yourself on your home sewing machine or longarm.
It’s a new week so we’re moving into a new quilting stitch! This week we’re going to focus on the swirl. You can easily dress it up or down by playing with the scale, adding extra pointy bits or using it as an all over or custom design within blocks or as background filler.
But first we have to start to develop the muscle memory to quilt the swirl, so we’ll be using our Full Line Stencil to mark out an all over swirl design so we have some nice clear chalk lines to follow for our first attempt.
You’ll notice for the entire swirl stencil section that my longarm swirls turned out WAY better than my domestic sewing machine swirls. That’s because I work on the longarm much more, so I’m a better quilter on it.
Whatever you practice the most on is what you’ll get good at, but it is also possible that you may find it easier to quilt on one of the other if you have the opportunity to free motion quilt on both.
We have created four reorderable quilt kits using solid fabrics from Northcott Colorworks. The richly colored fabrics are fabulous to work with, and it will make it very easy to see your stitches and make your stitching the star or the show.
