Sewing cabinet makeover: How to get a smooth white finish with Annie Sloan Chalk Paint

My addiction to upcycling furniture is almost as strong as my addiction to fabric and quilting. I just love taking an old piece of furniture that has good bones and breathing new life into it with a new coat of stain or paint.

My latest project was a large sewing cabinet that has been in the shop for a while. We are reorganizing the layout of the shop a bit and I wanted this cabinet to be front and center but it needed a makeover before that could happen. Every piece of the furniture in the shop that is used as a display is white so that the fabric on top of it will stand out against it. So I got a can of Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in Pure White and got to work.

I just love how the cabinet turned out. I was able to get a really smooth white finish and how the white paint modernizes the look of this beautiful sewing cabinet.

Two years ago I did a chalk paint video tutorial when I painted the hutch that you see in the backdrop of all my sewing video tutorials. It was a hit and has more views than any other video tutorial I have produced. So I made sure to turn the cameras on to take you through the transformation step-by-step.

In the video I show you what supplies you need, how to apply Annie Sloan Chalk Paint and Annie Sloan Clear Wax. I show you how much paint to use with each brush stroke and how to apply light, even coats, slowly building up the color to create a super smooth finish free of brush strokes.

This video is long because it goes over everything you need to know to take your own sewing cabinet and transform it with chalk paint. Check out the supply list below to get links to everything you need. The links I included are affiliate links, which means I get a small commission when you purchase them, which helps me be able to product more videos. If you would rather Google them and buy them without affiliate links, that is perfectly OK.

  1. This looks really clean and bright! I’d like to do that with the dresser that I use as my pressing table and fabric storage. Maybe this summer!
