I kind of have an addiction to making Quilt-As-You-Go Double-Sided Placemats. They are super fast, easy and, as you’ll see in today’s video, a perfect sewing and quilting project for kids. And the pattern is FREE!

But if you have a little one you’d like to pass the love of sewing on to, you can watch as my 5-year-old uses the sewing machine for the first time to successfully make her very own unicorn and mermaid placemat.
I talk about some of the steps I took ahead of time and you’ll see what tasks I had her do, where she needed a little help and what she was able do completely on her own. My daughter even has a few tips for you … they’re cute.
The finished project isn’t perfect, but that’s not the point. She has a fun placemat, that she made, is proud of and uses every night. What a great way to start that love of sewing and quilting from a young age.
